About the position

The Hardware Design Engineer - PCB Layout position at General Motors involves leading the in-house development of electronics design for next-generation Software Defined Vehicles (SDV). The role focuses on the electrical design, development, and review of Electronic Control Units (ECUs), ensuring robust hardware that meets GM specifications. The successful candidate will collaborate with various teams to optimize PCB layouts and support the integration of advanced technologies in automotive electronics.

Responsibilities

  • Creating and designing the physical layout of integrated circuits (ICs) or printed circuit boards (PCBs).
  • Conducting design rule checks (DRC) and design for manufacturability (DFM) checks to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Collaborating with circuit designers, system engineers, and packaging engineers to optimize layout design.
  • Selecting appropriate technology and processes for layout design based on project requirements.
  • Optimizing layout design for performance, power, area, and manufacturability with subject matter experts.
  • Supporting ECAD librarians in developing ECAD library parts that meet DFM and GM resiliency requirements.
  • Collaborating with component engineers and supply chain teams to select components for PCBA design.
  • Applying Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to optimize PCBA design for assembly processes.
  • Identifying opportunities for process improvements, cost reduction, and quality enhancement in PCBA manufacturing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
  • Professional experience creating digital/analog HW interfaces including schematic creation and/or PCB layout, simulation & supportive documentation.
  • Minimum 3 years working experience in PCB layout design.
  • Experience in design & analysis tools like Mentor Graphics (schematic & layout).

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous industry experience with infotainment, telematics or connectivity.
  • 5 years or more experience in PCB layout design.
  • Knowledgeable in High speed Communication Buses (Ethernet, PCIe, SerDes).
