About the position

The Hardware Design Engineer will be a key technical contributor within the Instrumentation Design Team of the Hardware Test Engineering Group at Apple. This role focuses on designing and enabling test solutions to ensure the quality of Apple products through innovative instrumentation. The engineer will thrive in a fast-paced environment, collaborating with cross-functional teams to develop high-quality technical solutions for next-generation products.

Responsibilities

  • Design, prototype, build, and validate instrumentation for high volume manufacturing test throughout all NPI phases until mass production.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners including system EE, SI, software diagnostics, and mechanical teams to define, implement, and validate test instruments.
  • Propose, negotiate, and design electrical engineering solutions to achieve functional and performance objectives.
  • Design and schematic capture of digital and analog electrical circuits and systems.
  • Lead and review PCB layouts.
  • Bring up and validate the instrumentation designs.
  • Collaborate with deployment teams to analyze and debug issues during factory integration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
  • Solid EE fundamentals and experience with common communication bus protocols (I2C, SPI, UART).
  • Knowledge of high-speed circuit design.
  • Working level knowledge of embedded systems.
  • Solid understanding of signal/power integrity concepts and best practices including transmission line theory.
  • Experience with schematic capture and constraint-driven PCB layout design using Cadence tools or similar.
  • Hands-on hardware bring-up, functional validation, and debugging experience using common EE test equipment (oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, logic analyzer, DMM, power supplies, and electronic loads).

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's or PhD Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
  • 2+ years of experience designing hardware for high volume manufacturing instruments.
  • Familiarity or proficiency in Cadence Allegro System Capture.
  • Design experience with STM32 and modern Altera FPGA.
  • Knowledge and experience with high-speed bus protocols: USB2/3/4, DisplayPort, HDMI, PCIE, Thunderbolt.
  • Passion to take on new challenges, learn new skills, and continually develop by staying open-minded and curious.
