About the position

The Mixed Signal Solutions department at HRL Laboratories is an integrated team of scientists and engineers dedicated to the design and integration of advanced mixed signal systems. This role involves working on innovative concepts that transition into prototype hardware, focusing on customized integrated circuits (ICs) and printed circuit boards (PCBs). As a Hardware Design Engineer, you will be responsible for creating electronic solutions that meet the demands of cutting-edge technology. Your contributions will be crucial in developing novel architectures and algorithms that enhance the performance and reliability of mixed signal systems. In this position, you will engage in designing engineering solutions for various electrical and electronic components, including both analog and digital subsystems. You will apply established engineering principles and adhere to development technology practices and guidelines. Your responsibilities will include generating board-level circuit requirements and developing comprehensive test plans for existing designs. This will involve validating tolerances, assessing form/fit/function, and ensuring compliance with safety and reliability standards. You will also be tasked with measuring system power and thermal generation related to printed circuit assemblies. Collaboration is key in this role, as you will work closely with both internal teams and outsourced development partners to ensure successful electrical hardware design and development. You will analyze product requirements from both a system and hardware perspective, proposing high-performance and cost-effective solutions that align with project goals. Your expertise will be instrumental in driving the success of innovative projects within the department.

Responsibilities

  • Design engineering solutions for electrical and electronic parts, analog and digital subsystems, and algorithms based on established engineering principles.
  • Generate board-level circuit requirements and develop test plans for existing designs.
  • Validate tolerances, form/fit/function, shock and vibration, electromagnetic interference, safety, reliability, thermal generation, and system power measurements related to printed circuit assemblies.
  • Collaborate and communicate with internal and outsourced development partners on electrical hardware design and development.
  • Analyze product requirements from a system and hardware perspective to propose high-performance, cost-effective solutions.

Requirements

  • Experience with taking a complex design through the entire hardware development cycle (specification, schematics, layout, bring-up, characterization, and testing).
  • Experience with system bring-up and debugging complex embedded systems.
  • Experience with high-speed digital design (e.g., PCIe, SERDES, HDMI).
  • Proficient with CAD tools (preferably Allegro) for design, layout, and simulation.
  • Good working knowledge of fundamental high-speed electrical engineering principles and circuit design principles.
  • Knowledge of power integrity concepts (decoupling capacitors, transient response, PDN design, etc.).
  • Knowledge of signal integrity concepts (crosstalk, insertion/return loss, termination, BGA breakout, fab material selection, etc.).
  • Knowledge of fundamental microelectronic test procedures and equipment (particularly RF measurements such as VNA and TDR).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and skilled in writing for reporting.

Benefits

  • Base salary range of $99,705 - $124,683 + bonus + benefits.
