About the position

BAE Systems is looking for a qualified Electrical Engineer to fill a junior-level position. The qualified candidate will work in a rapid development environment as part of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers who designs, develops, evaluates, verifies, and provides in-service engineering support for the Navy's Aircraft Launch and Recovery system. This position may require travel in support of system product installation, system operation verification and testing, and certification. We are searching for a creative out of the box thinker individual to assist our team moving forward into the future. The selected individual's focus will be on FPGA-based hardware, but will have the opportunity to learn basic systems engineering fundamental skills necessary for the success of every project we develop for the Navy. The workplace will also provide the opportunity to create and develop advanced technology capabilities in the areas of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and quality processes critical to defense work. Besides fulfilling the specific duties of a hardware/firmware designer, other responsibilities could include FPGA-based design implementation from concept-to-production, creating approaches to engineering processes, developing and updating drawings and documentation, developing and analyzing modular systems solutions, system testing and validation. The successful candidate will receive some mentoring from experienced managers and engineers as applicable and will learn to network and collaborate with the rest of the engineering team. This position is located in scenic and historic Southern Maryland in the St. Mary's County Technology Corridor adjacent to the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. Limited relocation assistance may be available for qualified candidates. Applicants must be currently residing in or willing to relocate to St. Mary's County, Maryland or surrounding areas.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to design, develop, evaluate, verify, and provide in-service engineering support for the Navy's Aircraft Launch and Recovery system.
  • Focus on FPGA-based hardware design and implementation from concept-to-production.
  • Create approaches to engineering processes and develop/update drawings and documentation.
  • Develop and analyze modular systems solutions, including system testing and validation.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team and receive mentoring from experienced managers and engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 3 - 5 years of Hardware and FPGA Firmware design experience.
  • Computer Aided Design experience.
  • Ability to develop and interpret Schematic Diagrams and PCB Layout Drawings.
  • Experience with Xilinx Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) Design using VHDL.
  • Basic understanding of Analog and Digital circuits.
  • Ability to learn new skills and tasks.
  • Attentive to detail and ability to stay focused on tasks.
  • Ability to analyze problems and develop creative solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong skills in Math and Physics.
  • Excellent MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, etc.).
  • Team player with a proactive attitude, able to be productive in a dynamic/collaborative environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of Altium Designer.
  • Knowledge of IEEE 91, 315, 991, IPC-2221 standards.
  • Strong knowledge of the Xilinx Vivado ML Toolset.
  • Strong knowledge of Xilinx FPGA, Spartan-7 or Artix-7 Family.
  • Strong knowledge of MATLAB and Spice Simulation Software (e.g., LTSpice).
  • Familiarity with RF hardware including waveguides, couplers, antennas.
  • Familiarity with common RF Laboratory instruments including Spectrum Analyzers, Network Analyzers, Signal Generators, and Oscilloscopes.
  • Familiarity with common Printed Circuit Board fabrication processes.
  • Familiarity with the RedHat Enterprise Linux Environment.
  • Familiarity with Python and C, C++ programming.
