About the position

As a Hardware Product Design Engineer within the Mac Engineering team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of portable and desktop computers. This position requires a blend of creativity, spatial reasoning, and meticulous attention to detail to collaboratively tackle design challenges. You will work closely with a diverse team of engineers and designers, leveraging your skills to seamlessly integrate technology into innovative products that enhance the lives of our customers. Your responsibilities will encompass the entire design process, from ideation to prototyping and testing, ensuring that every aspect of the product meets high standards of quality and functionality. In this role, you will collaborate with industrial designers, product integrity teams, and various hardware and software groups to refine and execute product designs. You will be responsible for developing initial product layouts and generating concepts that will be prototyped and tested to drive down-selection. Your partnership with external vendors and internal manufacturing teams will be crucial in optimizing designs for functionality, aesthetics, and manufacturability. Throughout the product lifecycle, you will perform stress, tolerance, and failure analyses to ensure that the design meets all necessary requirements. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to travel up to 20% to Asia to support factory builds, providing you with hands-on experience in the manufacturing process.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with industrial designers and various engineering teams to refine product designs.
  • Develop initial product layouts and generate design concepts.
  • Prototype and test designs to drive down-selection of concepts.
  • Partner with external vendors and internal manufacturing teams to optimize designs for function and manufacturability.
  • Perform stress, tolerance, and failure analyses to ensure design meets requirements throughout its lifecycle.
  • Travel to assembly sites in Asia to support factory builds.

Requirements

  • Strong skills in tolerance analysis and geometric dimensioning & tolerancing.
  • Experience in design for assembly and manufacturability.
  • Knowledge of high volume manufacturing processes for injection molded, die cast, sheet metal, and machined parts.
  • Proficiency in metrology and simple fixture design.
  • Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) tools and statistical process control.
