About the position

The Hardware Reliability Engineer (Starshield) at SpaceX is responsible for ensuring the reliability and quality of hardware used in national security efforts through the Starshield program. This role involves hands-on troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and driving design and process improvements to enhance satellite reliability. Engineers will work closely with cross-disciplinary teams and engage in all aspects of the hardware life cycle, from design to on-orbit operations.

Responsibilities

  • Support on-call shifts and respond to satellite and gateway alerts, review telemetry, and submit commands to recover operations.
  • Drive multidisciplinary failure investigations, build and track fault trees, and conduct tests/experiments to identify probable causes of failures.
  • Implement corrective actions for design, production, test, and operational issues to improve satellite reliability.
  • Perform hands-on troubleshooting in the lab, focusing on complex RF systems, compute and network avionics, and power electronics.
  • Create data analysis programs to identify satellite anomalous behavior and production yield issues.
  • Conduct regular reliability reviews to ensure design intent is achieved and identify opportunities for risk reduction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or physics.
  • 1+ years of experience in a design or manufacturing engineering role.

Nice-to-haves

  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • Demonstrated capability to think creatively and solve complex problems.
  • Experience in mechatronics or a combination of mechanical, electrical, and software skills.
  • Experience with RF test equipment and debugging RF systems.
  • Proficiency in programming and automation/scripting languages (Python, C, C++, SQL).
  • Knowledge of quality tools such as design of experiments, statistical process control, and root cause analysis.
