About the position

As a Hardware Requirements System Engineer at Meta Reality Labs, you will be an integral part of the teams responsible for designing, building, and testing prototypes for future consumer virtual reality (VR) experiences. This role is ideal for individuals who excel in collaborative environments, can generate innovative ideas, and are comfortable working in emerging technology sectors. You will be tasked with navigating ambiguity, mapping tradespaces, and transforming concepts into prototypes that can evolve into high-volume consumer products. The Hardware Requirements System Engineer will play a crucial role in ensuring the convergence of complex and novel sub-system and product architectures, which are essential for advancing consumer VR systems. This includes working on new sensing systems, display and optics systems, input devices, and full VR headsets. The position requires expert technical communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including Industrial Design (ID), hardware engineering, partnerships, supply chain, and core technology groups. Your primary goal will be to drive the incubation of new technologies from proof of concept through to integration into products for mass production. A strong technical understanding of consumer electronics and VR systems across the entire stack is essential. The ideal candidate will have a broad engineering background in electrical, mechanical, optics, semiconductors, or related fields, along with strong systems skills and demonstrated leadership capabilities. Previous experience in driving architecture convergence on complex consumer electronics products, as well as familiarity with SoC evaluation, optical systems, sensors, and CV algorithms, will be highly beneficial. In this role, you will develop processes to ensure proper documentation throughout all stages of product development, manage requirements flow, and oversee verification and validation processes. You will also be responsible for tracking and monitoring schedule performance, identifying solutions to recover schedules, and mitigating risks. Your leadership will provide insights into project expectations and priorities, while you will work on all aspects of system engineering from risk identification to strategic decision-making. Additionally, you will manage requirements and configuration through Model Based Systems Engineering, integrate insights across technical execution groups, and facilitate technical discussions to resolve requirement issues. Your contributions will help drive the development of new virtual reality experiences and advance the technology and research roadmap.

Responsibilities

  • Develop processes to ensure proper documentation at all stages of product development, requirements flow, verification and validation, and interaction between various subsystems
  • Ensure Systems Engineering is represented at architectural reviews and the needs of various subsystems are properly addressed
  • Assist in tracking and monitoring schedule performance. Identify solutions for recovering schedule and mitigating schedule risks
  • Stay abreast of potential resource conflicts and opportunities for leveraging efficiencies with other activities and develop risk mitigation plans
  • Provide leadership with insight to project expectations, priorities, perceptions, and plans
  • Work on all aspects of system engineering from initial identification of risk, opportunities, and issues at the operational level through to the strategic decision processes
  • Responsible for requirements and configuration management through Model Based Systems Engineering
  • Integrate across the organization to provide system engineering insights to all technical execution groups and TPMs
  • Review and provide technical evaluations of key System Engineering documents
  • Develop and review technical assessments and presentations
  • Manage the impact of requirement changes, and implement changes in requirements
  • Manage data-driven methods for developing requirements and verification related deliverables, such as specifications, design criteria, system descriptions, and verification tracking
  • Coordinate and facilitate technical discussions to resolve requirement issues
  • Drive the technical scoping and development of new technologies to deliver
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on blank-slate and early-phase prototyping and product exploration, mapping it to strategic and product questions which need to be resolved
  • Create hardware system metrics, KPIs, standards and tools
  • Drive development of system requirements to create new virtual reality experiences, and help advance technology and research roadmap

Requirements

  • 10+ years of product experience in electrical, mechanical or optical engineering
  • Experience building and managing technical teams
  • Experience with architecture and systems engineering across electrical, firmware, mechanical, audio and optical systems
  • Experience integrating and delivering one or more of these technologies: displays, optics, silicon, sensors, thermal systems
  • Experience in rapid prototyping and creating proof of concept models to share ideas and improve architectural decisions
  • Communication experience working with Product Development engineers, Product Managers and other hardware/software cross-functional teams
  • Experience working with partnerships teams and external partners at both a supply base and product level

Nice-to-haves

  • MS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or other related technical field or equivalent experience
  • Experience in regulated industries such as aerospace, defense, automotive or medical
  • Experience in firmware development, programming, computer vision, OS, game development, and complex sensing systems
  • Experience with various sensors and data streams, including IMU, lidar, radar and cameras
  • Experience creating system models to analyze system compute, latency and communication interface bandwidths across multiple subsystems within a heterogeneous compute environment in order to define the system architecture to meet the overall goals of the product definition
  • Working knowledge across the following areas with experience in at least one: interfaces, optical, sensors, modules, ISP and algorithm fundamentals, CV/ML - network impacts on latency, throughput and Jitter, VoIP, video communications - general Machine learning (DNN, CNN, RNN)
  • Experience with influencing silicon vendors roadmaps and SOC features sets with emphasis on using advanced IP in the realms of Machine Learning, Graphics and Imaging
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and managing by influence
