About the position

The Associate School Athletic Director at Hilo High School plays a crucial role in supporting the School Athletic Director in managing the school's athletic programs. This position is a full-time, 12-month role that requires a strong commitment to fostering a positive athletic environment for students. The Associate Athletic Director will assist in developing the school athletic budget, ensuring compliance with various regulations, and promoting high standards of conduct and sportsmanship among student-athletes. This role also involves significant administrative responsibilities, including maintaining accurate financial records, overseeing inventory, and coordinating athletic events and programs. In addition to financial management, the Associate Athletic Director will be responsible for ensuring that the athletic program adheres to Title IX and other relevant laws. They will work closely with coaches, staff, and the community to enhance the athletic experience for students, including organizing awards programs and facilitating training workshops for coaches. The Associate Athletic Director will also assist in monitoring student eligibility for participation in sports, ensuring that all athletes meet the necessary academic and conduct standards. The position requires strong organizational and communication skills, as the Associate Athletic Director will be involved in planning and coordinating various athletic activities, including interscholastic games and intramural programs. They will also assist in promoting good school-community relations by keeping the community informed about the athletic program and its achievements. This role is essential for maintaining a vibrant and successful athletic program at Hilo High School, contributing to the overall development and well-being of student-athletes.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing the school athletic budget and generating expenditure plans.
  • Support the School Athletic Director in maintaining accurate financial records.
  • Assist with the inventory of supplies and equipment, identifying items for replacement or purchase.
  • Provide recommendations for developing rules and regulations for the athletic program.
  • Ensure compliance with Title IX and other applicable laws and regulations.
  • Promote high standards of conduct and sportsmanship among student-athletes.
  • Assist in implementing policies to curb student violence and vandalism.
  • Prepare student eligibility and participation lists for all sports.
  • Organize athletic awards programs and staff onboarding.
  • Plan and coordinate interscholastic and intramural scheduled games and matches.
  • Assist in developing and administering the intramural program.
  • Support student-athletes in seeking athletic scholarships and planning post-high school experiences.
  • Supervise trips by athletic teams and maintain a report-filing system on athletic matters.
  • Assist in supervising the re-entry of injured athletes into competition.
  • Maintain and distribute current athletic policy handbooks and sports rules.
  • Arrange transportation needs for athletic teams and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Foster a program to support athletic teams and school spirit.
  • Supervise athletic ticket sales and fundraising events.
  • Assist in selecting and assigning athletic coaches and staff members.
  • Promote good school-community relations regarding the athletic program.
  • Coordinate game support services and supervise home games in the absence of the Athletic Director.
  • Coordinate requests for pre- or post-game meals with the School Food Services Manager.
  • Supervise the use of athletic facilities and equipment.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree, preferably in education with coursework in physical education or sports/athletic administration.
  • Thirty-six (36) months of successful work experience as an assistant athletic director, high school head coach, sports management specialist, or in a related field.
  • Possession of certification from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) is preferred.
  • Knowledge of athletic administration philosophy, budgeting, crowd management, fundraising, health and safety, sports medicine, and public relations.
  • Ability to plan, organize, direct, and coordinate school athletic activities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) is preferred.
