About the position

The Hazmat Technician position is an on-call role within the Cecil County Special Operations Team, responsible for responding to hazardous materials emergencies. The technician plays a crucial role in ensuring safety and environmental protection during incidents involving hazardous materials, requiring a strong understanding of safety protocols and emergency response procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Promptly respond to calls involving hazardous material incidents and associated emergency incidents following established protocols and procedures.
  • Conduct thorough assessments of hazardous material spills or fires to identify risks and determine appropriate response strategies.
  • Implement measures to contain and mitigate hazardous material releases, including deploying containment booms and applying absorbent materials.
  • Ensure all hazmat response equipment is properly maintained, inspected, and ready for immediate use.
  • Execute decontamination procedures for personnel, equipment, and victims following hazardous material incidents.
  • Participate in ongoing training exercises and drills to maintain proficiency in hazmat response techniques.
  • Complete detailed incident reports documenting response activities, findings, and outcomes for post-incident analysis.
  • Work collaboratively with other emergency response agencies to coordinate response efforts.
  • Assist in public education initiatives to raise awareness of hazardous materials and promote safety measures.
  • Participate in debriefings and after-action reviews to identify areas for improvement.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of three years' experience in EMS/Fire Rescue (career or volunteer).
  • Minimum of three years' experience related to the mitigation of hazardous material incidents.
  • Possession of a valid Class 'C' non-commercial driver's license with no more than three points.
  • Hazardous Materials Operations and/or Technician Certificate.
  • Must obtain a Hazardous Materials Technician Certificate within one year of employment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Emergency Vehicle Operator certification (EVOC).
  • Possession of a valid Class 'B' non-commercial driver's license and/or State of Maryland Certified Emergency Vehicle Operator.
