About the position

The Division Proposal Engineer within NCDOT Division 14 is responsible for preparing and managing contracts, cost estimates, and proposals for roadway engineering and construction projects. This internship provides an immersive opportunity to learn the intricacies of project development and the bidding process while gaining hands-on experience with tools and processes critical to the transportation industry. Under the guidance of the Division Proposal Engineer, interns will assist with various tasks, gaining exposure to project planning, contract preparation, and construction cost estimation. This role will provide a foundation for careers in engineering, construction management, and other technical disciplines within transportation infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to access and utilize NCDOT resources, including NCDOT Master Pay Item List, NCDOT Standard Specifications for Roads and Structures, and NCDOT Roadway Standard Drawings.
  • Assist in calculating estimated construction costs for Division proposals/contracts.
  • Review construction materials lists for accuracy and ensure associated provisions are included.
  • Vet bidders and review post-award documentation for compliance.
  • Check proposal drafts for consistency, omissions, and errors.
  • Support administrative tasks, such as tracking documentation and distributing hard copies of contracts.
  • Attend Division meetings to gain exposure to project development workflows.
  • Learn and contribute to the overall bidding and letting process for Division-level projects.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled full-time student in a bachelor's, master's, or professional level program at an accredited institution or recently graduated from a North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) within the past three years.
  • 24 credit hours completed.
  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (on 4.0 scale).
  • Pursuing a degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Surveying or related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, particularly Excel and Word.
  • Familiarity with Windows operating systems.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to learn quickly and work collaboratively.
