About the position

The Technical Services/Photogrammetry Unit is a specialized division dedicated to supporting North Carolina's transportation initiatives through advanced geospatial and photogrammetric technologies. The unit plays a critical role in creating and maintaining precise mapping and geospatial data that supports engineering design, infrastructure development, and project planning for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Utilizing cutting-edge tools like Bentley MicroStation and ArcGIS, the team develops high-quality maps, analyzes aerial imagery, and performs data validation to ensure accurate and reliable geospatial information. The unit also manages and updates NCDOT's extensive geospatial data holdings, provides visual quality assurance for critical projects, and collaborates with engineers to produce vicinity maps and other essential geospatial products. With its expertise in geomatics and photogrammetry, the team is instrumental in enabling efficient, data-driven decision-making across the department's transportation initiatives. The Technical Services/Photogrammetry Unit is seeking two motivated interns to assist with geospatial data organization, analysis, and mapping tasks essential to North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) projects. This internship offers hands-on experience with industry-standard tools, providing valuable skills in photogrammetry, geomatics, and geospatial sciences.

Responsibilities

  • Create and organize historical NCDOT aerial photography boundary data using Bentley MicroStation and ArcGIS.
  • Update and maintain Photogrammetry Unit holdings of NCDOT geospatial data.
  • Perform visual quality reviews of tiles for the E911 Coastal 2024 project.
  • Assist Photogrammetry technicians with tasks, such as creating vicinity maps and producing geospatial products for NCDOT projects.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled full-time student in a bachelor's, master's, or professional level program at an accredited institution or recently graduated from a North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) within the past three years.
  • 24 credit hours completed.
  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (on 4.0 scale).

Nice-to-haves

  • Pursuing studies in Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Earth Science, or Geospatial Science.
  • Proficiency with software such as Bentley MicroStation, ArcGIS, and photogrammetric analytical stereo plotting tools.
  • General computer skills, including familiarity with geospatial and engineering technologies.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong ability to learn new technical skills quickly.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
