About the position

The HBM Operator position at BWX Technologies involves operating large CNC Horizontal Boring Mills and performing multi-axis machining operations with high precision. This role is part of a weekend shift schedule, allowing employees to work 32 hours while being compensated for 40 hours. The operator will be responsible for setting up and operating machinery, collaborating with programmers, and ensuring quality through inspections and maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate large CNC Horizontal Boring Mills and associated auxiliary equipment.
  • Perform contour milling, trepanning, boring, drilling, tapping, thread milling, and contour turning operations.
  • Collaborate with programmers to develop and test run machining programs.
  • Proofread programs and notify supervisors of potential issues.
  • Position and secure workpieces and fixtures on the machine table.
  • Obtain and verify tools from the crib for accuracy and application.
  • Assemble tooling as required and use higher math for tooling design.
  • Assist crane operators with rigging and moving parts for loading and unloading.
  • Conduct final inspections using inspection probes and precision measuring equipment.
  • Perform minor maintenance on machines and keep the work area clean.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of two years relevant experience in precision machining on large machines.
  • Journeyman level machinist designation or equivalent preferred.
  • Proficient with CNC controls, including G and M coded commands.
  • Ability to edit or modify programs and write minor programs as necessary.
  • Working knowledge of feeds and speeds for various materials.
  • Ability to work to ±.001" tolerance and achieve microfinish 16 when required.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret geometric tolerancing per ANSI Y14.5.
  • Experience using various measuring instruments, including dial bore gauges and micrometers.
  • Skills to maintain accurate documentation and follow complex procedures.
