About the position

At BWX Technologies, Inc., we are currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Horizontal Boring Mill Operator - Continuous Path at our Barberton, Ohio facility. This role is part of our weekend shift, which consists of twelve hours on Saturday and Sunday, and eight hours on Monday (with the possibility of working Friday instead of Monday). This unique schedule allows employees to work thirty-two hours while being compensated for forty hours, with scheduled off days falling between Tuesday through Friday or Monday through Thursday, depending on the shift. Training for this position will occur with the Monday to Friday crew before transitioning to the weekend crew. The Horizontal Boring Mill Operator will be responsible for setting up and operating large CNC Horizontal Boring Mills, along with any associated auxiliary equipment. The machining operations will encompass a variety of tasks including contour milling, trepanning, boring, drilling, tapping, thread milling, and contour turning with facing head attachments. The operator will perform multi-axis machining operations with high precision, utilizing various tools and equipment such as right angle heads, facing heads, inspection probes, jib cranes, and precision measuring instruments. In this role, the operator will collaborate with programmers to develop and test run programs, proofread programs, and notify supervisors or programmers of any potential issues. The operator will also be responsible for positioning and securing workpieces and fixtures, obtaining and verifying tools from the crib, assembling tooling as required, and using advanced math and engineering theories to work with tooling engineers to devise optimal tooling designs and practices. Additionally, the operator will direct and assist crane operators with rigging and moving parts, perform final inspections using inspection probes and precision measuring equipment, and maintain a clean and orderly work area. Minor maintenance on machines and tooling will also be part of the job responsibilities, along with maintaining necessary records and completing process documentation as required.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate large CNC Horizontal Boring Mills and associated auxiliary equipment.
  • Perform multi-axis machining operations with high precision.

  • Position and secure workpieces and fixtures on the table.
  • Obtain and verify tools from the crib for application.
  • Assemble tooling as required for machining operations.
  • Use higher math and engineering theories to work with tooling engineers.
  • Direct and assist crane operator with rigging and moving parts.
  • Perform final inspection of features using inspection probes and precision measuring equipment.
  • Clean and deburr jobs as necessary and attach seals and protective covers.
  • Perform minor maintenance on machines, attachments, and tooling as required.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area and equipment.
  • Verify identity and physical characteristics of materials as required.
  • Maintain necessary records and complete process documentation.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency required.
  • A minimum of two years' relevant experience performing precision machining functions on large machines is desired.
  • Journeyman level machinist designation or equivalent is preferred.
  • Proficient with CNC controls, including G and M coded commands.
  • Ability to edit or modify programs as necessary and write minor programs.
  • Working knowledge of feeds and speeds for all types of material.
  • Ability to work to ±.001" tolerance and microfinish 16 when necessary.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret geometric tolerancing per ANSI Y14.5.
  • Ability to use various measuring instruments, including dial bore gages, indicator snap gages, verniers, and .0001 micrometers.
  • Skills necessary to maintain accurate documentation and follow complicated procedures.
