About the position
The High Dosage ELA Tutor position at SmartStart Education involves working with small groups of elementary school students to improve their English Language Arts (ELA) skills. The role is designed for individuals passionate about teaching and making a positive impact on urban, working-class youth. Tutors will provide targeted support to students identified as struggling with fundamental ELA skills, working in both classroom and pull-out settings. This part-time position requires flexibility and a commitment to fostering student success.
Responsibilities
- Work with small groups of 1-4 elementary school students to improve ELA skills.
- Provide instruction in letter/sound recognition, sight word recognition, reading comprehension, and fluency.
- Take daily attendance using a personal device or school-issued laptop.
- Conduct tutoring sessions in both push-in and pull-out settings.
- Demonstrate flexibility in adapting to different classroom environments.
Requirements
- Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in any field.
- At least one year of experience in teaching or tutoring within a school or educational setting.
- Comprehensive understanding of challenges faced by urban students and communities.
- Mastery of elementary ELA concepts and skills.
- Demonstrated passion and commitment to student success.
- Experience working with students with special needs.
- Exemplary punctuality and adherence to schedules.
- Proficiency in communication skills.
Nice-to-haves
- Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
