About the position

The Head 7th Grade Boys Basketball Coach at Vancouver Public Schools is responsible for leading and developing a comprehensive athletics program for the basketball team. This role involves conducting practices, overseeing games, educating athletes, and ensuring compliance with relevant policies. The coach will work under the direction of the building Athletic Director and Principal, focusing on character development and a positive experience for all athletes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and articulate a vision for the basketball program that emphasizes character development.
  • Recruit student athletes for participation in the basketball program.
  • Conduct practices focusing on proper technique and mechanics of basketball.
  • Attend and supervise athletes at games, executing game strategy effectively.
  • Attend yearly Coaches' Institute training in August.
  • Teach and demonstrate appropriate sportsmanship to athletes, parents, and the school community.
  • Organize, supervise, and evaluate practice sessions for the team.
  • Know and adhere to WIAA, league, district, and building rules and policies.
  • Complete required district and WIAA trainings around sport-specific rules and safety.
  • Maintain and inventory uniforms and equipment for the team.
  • Communicate effectively in both oral and written forms with diverse parties including staff, students, parents, and the community.
  • Work successfully as a team player and follow the Head Coach/Athletic Director's program direction.
  • Treat co-workers, supervisors, students, parents, and others with dignity and respect at all times.
  • Serve as a positive role model for students, practicing expected behaviors.
  • Work in a flexible and cooperative manner to meet program requirements.
  • Regular attendance to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basketball and coaching experience with K-12 athletes preferred.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification, or ability to obtain prior to the start date.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with culturally, racially, and linguistically diverse students and parents.
