About the position

The Head Custodian I position at Paradise Unified School District is designed to oversee and manage the cleaning, custodial, and routine maintenance functions for the assigned school plant. This role requires a proactive approach to ensure the cleanliness, safety, and security of the school facilities. The Head Custodian I operates with limited supervision, working within a broad framework of policies and procedures, and is responsible for directing, coordinating, and overseeing the work of custodial staff in a lead supervisory capacity. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining the overall environment of the school, ensuring that all areas, including classrooms, offices, and grounds, are kept in optimal condition. In this role, the Head Custodian I will plan, assign, and participate in various cleaning and maintenance tasks, ensuring that all work is completed to established standards. The position involves preparing work plans and schedules, estimating the resources needed for projects, and inspecting completed work for accuracy. The Head Custodian I will also be responsible for performing routine maintenance and repairs on building fixtures and equipment, operating heating and ventilation systems, and ensuring that all safety protocols are followed. Additionally, this position requires effective communication with school administrators and staff to address custodial and maintenance needs, as well as maintaining records and preparing reports related to the custodial functions. The Head Custodian I must also ensure the security of the school facilities, which includes locking and unlocking doors, inspecting alarms, and performing routine maintenance on locks. This position is essential for creating a safe and welcoming environment for students and staff alike, and it requires a strong commitment to quality and safety in all custodial operations.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, assigns, directs and participates in cleaning, custodial and routine maintenance functions for assigned school site.
  • Directs, trains and oversees the work of assigned day and night custodial personnel in a lead supervisory capacity.
  • Prepares work plans and schedules for the completion of custodial/maintenance projects.
  • Performs groundskeeper work.
  • Estimates time, materials and other resources needed to complete custodial, grounds and maintenance functions.
  • Inspects completed work for accuracy and compliance to instructions and established custodial/maintenance standards.
  • Performs and/or directs routine maintenance, repairs and adjustments to building fixtures, equipment and appliances.
  • Operates, sets and checks boilers, furnaces, heaters, air conditioning, swamp coolers, lighting systems and timers as required.
  • Inspects assigned school facilities and grounds for vandalism and sanitary/safety hazards; performs necessary repair/cleanup or reports major hazards to appropriate authority.
  • Orders, stores and maintains inventory of cleaning supplies and materials for assigned facilities/plant; monitoring expenditures to ensure compliance with established budget requirements.
  • Cleans and maintains classrooms, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, gymnasium, offices, grounds and related areas.
  • Cleans walls, furniture, windows, woodwork, lockers, chalkboards and other equipment; paints over graffiti.
  • Sweeps walks, hallways and driveways; picks up paper and rubbish.
  • Performs routine painting of interior/exterior walls, ceilings and trim.
  • Directs and assists in the set up and arrangement of furniture, facilities and grounds for assemblies, lunch, athletic events and special meetings/events.
  • Confers with school site administrators and staff regarding custodial and maintenance projects and activities.
  • Ensures security of assigned facility; locks and unlocks doors, windows and gates; inspects burglar/smoke alarms for proper functioning, performs routine maintenance and repair of locks and/or arranges for major lock repairs.
  • Maintains records and prepares routine reports related to assigned functions.
  • Directs and participates in the routine maintenance of custodial and other tools and equipment.
  • Initiates work orders for major maintenance needs and inspects completed work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Acts as information source to subordinates regarding work methods, procedures, problems and standards.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid California driver's license.
  • Graduation from high school and three years in custodial trade or equivalent training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
