About the position

The Head of Life Underwriter role at MassMutual focuses on enhancing the life underwriting operations in alignment with the company's strategic goals. This position involves collaborating with the Chief Life Underwriter to foster a culture of learning and development while ensuring a strong risk culture. The role is accountable for operationalizing strategies to improve the experiences of underwriters, financial advisors, and customers, while demonstrating strong leadership and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Chief Life Underwriter in establishing and driving the strategic direction of life underwriting operations.
  • Operationalize the underwriting strategy and implement solutions to enhance the experience of underwriters and customers.
  • Foster a culture aligned with the company's purpose, values, and strategy.
  • Lead the life underwriting team to provide efficient and quality service to field offices and agents.
  • Ensure the staffing model meets variable and growing demands.
  • Improve organizational proficiency through continuing education and development efforts.
  • Assume ownership of underwriting decisions within approval authority and respond to escalations.
  • Implement continuous process improvement practices within the underwriting organization.
  • Identify, implement, and monitor key performance metrics to ensure operational excellence.
  • Build and maintain field presence through agency visits and industry events.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of Life Underwriting experience.
  • Authority limit of $10m or higher at MassMutual or a prior carrier.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of risk selection (medical, non-medical, financial).
  • Understanding of medical terminology and ability to make sound risk decisions based on medical data.
  • Proven ability to interact and collaborate effectively with others in a professional manner.

Nice-to-haves

  • College degree or equivalent years of experience preferred.
  • Industry designations/education (FALU, FLMI, CLU) preferred.
  • Experience working with reinsurers.
  • Strong knowledge of the value of new business, profits, and product shelf to manage mortality and morbidity.
