About the position

The Head Lifeguard (Adaptive) position at the City of Houston's Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for ensuring the safety of the public during swimming activities. This role involves monitoring pool activities, enforcing safety rules, maintaining pool equipment, and performing basic housekeeping tasks. The Head Lifeguard will also participate in training and must possess excellent swimming skills. This position is crucial for promoting a safe and enjoyable environment for all pool users.

Responsibilities

  • Observe and monitor swimming activities and deck safety to ensure adherence to safety precautions.
  • Enforce pool facility rules.
  • Maintain and operate basic pool maintenance and water safety equipment such as vacuuming, brushing downsides, cleaning filters, and setting up equipment.
  • Check pool chemical readings on pH balance and chlorine levels.
  • Perform basic housekeeping activities such as checking restrooms, offices, porches, and swimming areas.
  • Complete a variety of forms, logs, and timesheets.
  • Inspect the facility for hazardous conditions that may have occurred overnight.
  • Participate in special classes required for lifeguard training.
  • Maintain courteous and cooperative interactions with the public.
  • Demonstrate excellent swimming skills.

Requirements

  • Must be able to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and basic written instructions.
  • Requires six (6) months of experience as a lifeguard or water safety instructor.
  • Must be certified in Lifeguard Training or Water Safety Instruction and First Aid/CPR.

Nice-to-haves

  • Preference for applicants who possess required certifications from a city-approved agency.
  • Preference for eligible veteran applicants.
