About the position

As the Head of Data & Governance, you will take overall ownership of the company's data assets and enterprise data science capabilities. This role is pivotal in defining and implementing the data strategy and leading an enterprise-wide data organization to shift the culture of Chatham to embrace data as a strategic advantage. You will be responsible for creating a federated data management function, ensuring firm-wide partnership and commitment across functions for data architecture, engineering, governance, and quality. Your leadership will be crucial in establishing data quality standards, monitoring adherence to data management standards, and building a center of excellence to support a common data management approach. In this role, you will coordinate the collection and aggregation of data with relevant stakeholders, enabling strategic data-driven decisions at the senior management level. You will work closely with business unit leaders to define and assess performance, drive actionable insights, and implement advanced analytic processes. Your impact will be transformative, requiring a blend of operational approach, deep technical skills, and strategic mindset to drive the organization's data journey. You will need to engage credibly with stakeholders within the Technology function and facilitate the setting of data management standards to achieve effective and consistent data management across the organization. As a successful candidate, you will leverage data assets to develop solutions that achieve financial outcomes while optimizing actuarial and regulatory functions. You will also drive enhanced information security and data protection, enabling the establishment of an Agile, data-driven environment. Your leadership presence and influencing skills will be essential in communicating the opportunities for data and governance across the business, ensuring that those opportunities are realized effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Create a federated data management function ensuring firm-wide partnership and commitment across data architecture, engineering, governance, and quality.
  • Establish and act as the ultimate owner of enterprise data quality standards and data dictionary, ensuring data integrity throughout the data lifecycle.
  • Monitor and report on adherence to data management standards and compliance with data-related regulations, recommending adjustments as necessary.
  • Build a center of excellence to support a common data management approach and architecture across teams.
  • Coordinate the collection and aggregation of data with stakeholders to facilitate strategic data-driven decisions at the senior management level.
  • Identify the need for new infrastructure/tools to support changes in data flow in collaboration with the Technology organization.
  • Accelerate analytics utilization across the company by optimizing the data science and analytics organization.
  • Partner with business leaders to define and assess performance, driving actionable insights through analytics.
  • Define, develop, and implement advanced analytic processes within business units, creating methods for consistency and standardization.

Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in data governance, data engineering, and data strategy, with a focus on leadership roles.
  • Experience building new Data Practices or leading significant transformations of existing practices, with proven experience in managing and scaling data teams across multiple geographies and products.
  • Advanced degree such as a Master's or Ph.D. in a relevant field, including information management, data science, computer science, or business administration.
  • Expertise in data governance frameworks and compliance requirements (GDPR, CCPA, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience with ETL tools, data lakes, and data warehousing solutions (Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, etc.).
  • Strong familiarity with cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of data visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI.
  • Strong grasp of modern data architecture, data modeling techniques, and best practices for data governance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Financial services experience is beneficial but not required.
  • Demonstrated ability to be successful in a complicated, highly collaborative enterprise, especially with large data volumes and operational complexity.
