About the position

Argonne National Laboratory is seeking an experienced communications professional to lead the strategy and execution of communications from the Laboratory Director, Chief Operations Officer, and Chief Research Officer to both internal and external audiences. The ideal candidate will thrive in a scientific or technical environment and possess a proven track record of working closely with senior-level executives to develop, adopt, and implement communications strategies that yield measurable results and align with the goals of senior executives. The operations staff play a crucial role in enabling the science mission through excellence in various professions, from financial management to groundskeeping. Argonne operates large research facilities that serve over 7,000 researchers globally each year and collaborates with academic, government, industrial, and community organizations to drive pivotal discoveries and foster groundbreaking innovations. The successful candidate will develop and leverage a deep understanding of the laboratory's mission, priorities, stakeholders, and partnerships. They will lead a small team in executing high-quality communications that support the laboratory's science mission, enhance engagement, and build a positive reputation for the laboratory and its top executives. The candidate will utilize the skills of Argonne's professional teams, including writers, editors, graphic designers, photographers, and videographers, as well as personnel in events and protocol, media relations, and digital communications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the strategy and execution of communications for the Laboratory Director, COO, and CRO.
  • Develop and implement effective strategic communications projects and initiatives for C-level executives.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with C-level executives to understand and represent management's perspective.
  • Work on internal and external communications needs, including speechwriting and event briefings.
  • Create and edit content across various platforms and styles, adapting writing to capture the unique voices of different leaders.
  • Effectively communicate scientific and technical ideas to lay audiences.
  • Manage projects with strict adherence to deadlines and budgets, ensuring successful milestone achievement.
  • Deliver measurable results in terms of awareness, client satisfaction, and engagement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, English, journalism, or a related scientific/technical discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience in communications, particularly in executive communications within a scientific or technical organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute effective strategic communications for C-level executives.
  • Strong management, leadership, and communication skills, with experience presenting to senior management.
  • Outstanding project management skills with proven experience in meeting production schedules and deadlines.
  • Ability to synthesize and convey institutional messages to diverse audiences.
  • Creativity in developing novel approaches to annual events or programs.

Nice-to-haves
