About the position

The Head Start Bus Driver plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient transport of children and families to and from program activities, as well as on field trips. This position is integral to the operations of the Y, a nonprofit organization dedicated to community strengthening through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The driver is responsible for maintaining the vehicle in safe operating conditions and fostering a positive environment for passengers.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safe transport of children and families between program activities and home.
  • Maintain a clean and safe vehicle at all times.
  • Follow the safest and most efficient routes as determined by the Transportation Coordinator.
  • Obey all applicable laws and regulations to ensure passenger safety.
  • Establish trust and rapport with parents and children.
  • Share daily information with classroom staff regarding children and parents.
  • Report any concerns about Head Start families to appropriate staff.
  • Communicate with staff regarding transportation issues, such as parents not being home.
  • Know the routes and ensure children board and exit at the correct stops.
  • Release children only to authorized individuals.
  • Administer basic first aid or CPR in emergencies.
  • Perform emergency procedures, including vehicle evacuation.
  • Monitor and maintain vehicle fluid levels and cleanliness.
  • Complete daily safety checklists and maintain required paperwork.
  • Report any vehicle damage or malfunctions immediately.
  • Collaborate with the Bus Monitor to teach children safety procedures.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding Head Start families.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Current in-state Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with School Bus & Passenger (S&P) endorsements.
  • Knowledge of Department of Transportation regulations and local driving laws.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge for routine maintenance and problem identification.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and communicate effectively with staff, children, and parents.
  • Physical, emotional, and mental ability to drive safely with children on board.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Pass pre-employment and random drug and alcohol screenings.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual fluency (English/Spanish) is helpful.
  • Familiarity with local resources, languages, and customs.
