About the position

The Head Start Bus Monitor position is a part-time role focused on ensuring the safe transportation of children and families to and from program activities. This position supports the YMCA's mission of community strengthening through youth development and social responsibility. The Bus Monitor is responsible for maintaining safety protocols, assisting the bus driver, and promoting a positive environment for children during transit.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the transportation of children and families between program activities and home or bus stops.
  • Notify the driver and/or supervisor of any safety issues or concerns.
  • Interact with children to reinforce classroom learning during bus rides.
  • Collaborate with the Bus Driver to teach children safety procedures for boarding and exiting the bus.
  • Address child safety and behavioral concerns while the bus is in motion.
  • Ensure each child is properly restrained in a Child Safety Restraint System.
  • Share daily observations and information with classroom staff regarding children and parents.
  • Check that the bus is empty and all children are accounted for at the end of each run.
  • Report any concerns about Head Start families to appropriate staff.
  • Know the routes and the location of stops for each child.
  • Respond professionally to all Head Start children and families.
  • Assist the driver in keeping the vehicle clean and in safe operating condition.
  • Maintain accurate recordkeeping for program requirements.
  • Report any damage or malfunction of the bus immediately to the Bus Driver.
  • Assist with pre- and post-trip vehicle checks and maintain safety supplies.
  • Attend all required workshops and meetings.
  • Understand Head Start Performance Standards and local child care licensing regulations.
  • Promote Head Start positively in the community.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding Head Start children, families, and staff.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. preferred.
  • Knowledgeable of area streets and locations.
  • Ability to work sensitively with staff, children, and parents.
  • Ability to organize time efficiently and accept responsibility with limited supervision.
  • Physical, emotional, and mental ability to assist the Bus Driver with children in a safe manner.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
