About the position

The Head Start Classroom Teacher is responsible for providing education and developmental services to preschool-age children in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards. This role involves planning and implementing developmentally appropriate practices, conducting assessments, and collaborating with parents and staff to support children's growth and learning.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and implement developmentally appropriate practices based on children's abilities.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans consistent with program curriculum and guidelines.
  • Supervise and guide teaching staff, parents, and volunteers in appropriate behavior and teaching techniques.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of each child and maintain progress records.
  • Conduct home visits and parent-teacher conferences to discuss children's goals and progress.
  • Implement and support behavior plans for children.
  • Supervise children and ensure their safety from physical punishment or verbal abuse.
  • Observe and refer children showing signs of illness, emotional disturbance, or learning disorders.
  • Model good nutritional habits and encourage healthy practices.
  • Collaborate with paraprofessionals and special service providers to support children's needs.
  • Maintain inventory of classroom materials and supplies and ensure confidentiality of records.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with coursework equivalent to a major in Education.
  • One year of classroom experience teaching preschool-age and/or infant/toddler-age children.
  • Knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards and child development principles.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with early childhood assessment and educational activities based on current research.
  • Skills in analyzing data and drawing valid conclusions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with parents and staff.
