About the position

The Early Childhood Center Director at the YMCA of the East Bay is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the child development center, which includes providing child care, infant/toddler care, and preschool services. This role involves designing and delivering high-quality programming, overseeing staff, ensuring compliance with regulations, and maintaining effective communication with parents and the community. The director plays a crucial role in fostering a safe and nurturing environment for children while managing educational and administrative goals.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver high-quality programming that achieves educational, administrative, and service delivery goals.
  • Oversee the Early Childhood Impact Center including supervision of staff, coaching, performance management, and evaluation.
  • Make regular classroom observations and review weekly lesson plans.
  • Hold individual classroom team conferences related to observations and plans.
  • Identify training needs of education and family service staff.
  • Maintain necessary records documenting the growth and development of education staff.
  • Facilitate and monitor home visit responsibilities of education staff.
  • Ensure daily staffing requirements and child/staff ratios are met, filling in as necessary.
  • Make recommendations on staffing, program, and expenditures, and maintain inventory documents.
  • Assist in the hiring process for center staff in coordination with Human Resources.
  • Provide ongoing communication to staff and facilitate regular meetings and mandated trainings.
  • Ensure program compliance with federal/state requirements and maintain accurate reports and documentation.
  • Ensure confidentiality of child, family, and program files.
  • Report suspected child abuse and unusual incidents as required.
  • Ensure a healthy, safe, and clean environment; handle emergencies and administer first aid/CPR if needed.
  • Monitor parent involvement through contacts and meetings.
  • Complete accounting records, time cards, and reports accurately and timely.
  • Make referrals to support services based on children's needs and follow up on them.
  • Coordinate support services offered by other service areas within the center.
  • Review children's developmental screening results and service plans for accuracy.
  • Request repairs using Facilities software and keep the Area Manager informed.
  • Complete purchase requisitions and submit paperwork.
  • Serve as a resource to licensing representatives and community service agencies.
  • Maintain rapport with parents and community members from diverse backgrounds.
  • Encourage and develop opportunities for parent participation in children's education.
  • Monitor parent involvement through contacts and meetings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in early childhood education, child development, or a closely related field with at least 12 semester units in child development.
  • Two years of experience as a teacher or administrator in a publicly funded preschool or child development program, with one year in a supervisory capacity.
  • Child Development Site Supervisor or Program Director Permit issued by the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
  • Completion of 15 hours of preventive health practices training with a current certificate in pediatric first aid and CPR.
  • Strong knowledge of Early Childhood Education/Development theories and practices.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural, interdisciplinary environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Valid California Driver's License and proof of auto insurance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • CPR Certification.
  • Supervising experience in a child development setting.
