About the position

The University of Minnesota's Department of Surgery is seeking a Health AI Engineer (Researcher 4) to join the Division of Health Data Science. This role involves working on various research projects focused on health data science, artificial intelligence, and biomedical informatics. The position is designed for individuals with a Master's or Ph.D. in relevant fields and offers an annually renewable professional academic appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct computational experiments to execute algorithms on health and biomedical informatics projects.
  • Assist with new project development including literature review and study design.
  • Make decisions on project approaches and resource utilization under general supervision.
  • Implement NLP algorithms and summarize findings for research topics.
  • Write, edit, and critique technical reports and publications describing research results.
  • Communicate and present analytical results to researchers and academic professionals.

Requirements

  • M.S. in Computer Science, Informatics, Computational Linguistics, Statistics, or related technical disciplines with two years of experience, or a bachelor's degree with four years of experience.
  • Understanding of algorithms, data structures, and software engineering principles.
  • Strong programming skills in Python/Perl or Java; knowledge of C/C++ and SQL.
  • Understanding of natural language processing, data mining, machine learning, and statistical methods.
  • Experience working independently in a rapidly changing scientific environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Research experience in natural language processing and text mining in electronic health records or biomedical literature.
  • Knowledge of medical terminologies and ontologies (e.g., UMLS, SNOMED-CT, ICD).
  • Expertise in Machine Learning, Neural Networks, and Deep Learning for NLP tasks.
  • Experience in publishing and presenting scientific papers in conferences or journals.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of research scientists.
