About the position

The Health Benefits Assistant position at the Jonhan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center involves providing administrative support to the Member Services Unit and clinical staff. The role is crucial in assisting veterans with their medical benefits applications, ensuring accurate data collection, and verifying eligibility for various medical benefits. The incumbent serves as the primary contact for veterans accessing the VA system, guiding them through the application process and addressing their inquiries regarding benefits and co-payments.

Responsibilities

  • Interview patients applying for medical benefits in person, by telephone, or through other means.
  • Enter demographic, insurance, and income information into the VistA system for determining entitlement to medical care.
  • Verify eligibility and entitlement for benefits using various methods, including income assessments and military discharge documents.
  • Advise veterans on their entitlement to medical benefits and discuss co-payment requirements.
  • Function as the single administrative contact for clients during their interaction with the VA Walla Walla.
  • Determine eligibility based on current regulations and directives governing entitlement to medical benefits.
  • Review available documentation and databases to assess eligibility status and enrollment priority group for VA health care.
  • Assist veterans in understanding their appeals rights and procedures if determined ineligible for benefits.

Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in federal service, related to Business Office/Health Administration Service programs.
  • Knowledge of medical and administrative record systems, including the Privacy Act and Freedom of Information Act.
  • Ability to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to deal with a variety of individuals with tact and diplomacy.
  • Proficiency in using personal computers, including Word, Excel, and various VISTA packages.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a healthcare setting or with veteran services.
  • Familiarity with the VistA system and its applications.
