About the position

The Health & Environmental Investigator I/II positions at King County are responsible for providing education, inspection, and compliance services to food establishments and water recreation facilities. The role aims to minimize risks of injury and disease while ensuring public health standards are met. Successful candidates will work collaboratively within a team to implement program activities aligned with King County's Equity and Social Justice Ordinance, contributing to healthier communities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide culturally competent education and technical assistance to food industries and water recreation facilities.
  • Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with public health and environmental codes.
  • Perform foodborne illness investigations and coordinate with senior investigators.
  • Respond to public complaints regarding foodborne illness and environmental health concerns.
  • Maintain accurate field records and use program-based computerized systems.
  • Present environmental health program information at public forums and meetings.
  • Implement program activities outlined by the King County Equity and Social Justice Ordinance.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree meeting the minimum requirements for obtaining a valid certificate as Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) or Registered Sanitarian (RS).
  • Valid Washington State Driver License and ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual in one of the common non-English languages in King County (e.g., Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Somali, etc.).
  • Knowledge of the King County Food Code and Washington State Water Recreation Facilities Code.
  • Experience conducting plan reviews or inspections for food establishments or water recreation facilities.
