The Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School is dedicated to improving global health delivery and promoting health equity worldwide. This postdoctoral fellowship, established in memory of Paul Farmer, is designed for early-career researchers who will spend two years conducting original research in low-income settings of the Global South. The department emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach, recognizing that traditional medical models alone cannot address the complex social, economic, and political factors influencing global health care. Through collaboration with community-based organizations, the department aims to develop and evaluate interventions that enhance health care delivery. Fellows will be assigned a mentor from the department's senior faculty, who will guide them in their research endeavors. The department leads research in various areas, including digital technology for health care, the ecology of poverty and development, health care delivery systems, and the health impacts of the climate crisis. The fellowship provides not only a stipend but also research funding and professional development opportunities, allowing fellows to participate in seminars and workshops at Harvard Medical School. The goal of this program is to cultivate a new generation of academic leaders equipped to advance health equity through social medicine research.
