About the position

The Public Health Institute (PHI) is seeking a full-time Health Equity Program Associate for its Berkeley Media Studies Group (BMSG). This position is designed for a detail-oriented individual who can effectively collaborate with diverse partners, including health department staff, community organizers, and advocates, to advance racial and health equity through narrative change and communications. The Health Equity Program Associate will thrive in a fast-paced environment, engaging with various stakeholders to provide targeted support on communicating about equity issues. This role is remote but requires the incumbent to be based in California and travel for trainings, community meetings, and conferences primarily within the state. The Health Equity Program Associate will work closely with BMSG's Health Equity Coordinator to develop long-term relationships with partners, identify and synthesize relevant research, facilitate meetings, and support project management. The position involves applying communication research in real-world situations, assisting with tailored technical assistance and training, and developing materials that promote effective communication about racial and health equity. The ideal candidate will be passionate about public health and racial justice, possess strong organizational skills, and be comfortable pivoting to address emerging equity issues. Essential duties include supporting the Health Equity Coordinator in building and maintaining professional relationships, assessing complex interpersonal dynamics among partners, providing tailored technical assistance, conducting literature reviews, reviewing communication materials, and coordinating logistics for trainings and meetings. The role also involves project management, writing proposals and advocacy materials, and collaborating with other teams within BMSG. The Health Equity Program Associate will be expected to travel occasionally for meetings and events, contributing to the overall mission of advancing equity in California and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Support BMSG's Health Equity Coordinator in building and maintaining professional relationships with partners.
  • Represent BMSG at meetings with partners.
  • Assess complex interpersonal dynamics, needs, and concerns among a wide array of partners of different backgrounds.
  • Maintain strong relationships with partners and quickly become familiar with their issues and goals.
  • Adopt and develop processes for being responsive to partners' evolving needs.
  • Assist with providing tailored technical assistance (TA) and training on communicating about racial and health equity.
  • Integrate various approaches into BMSG's technical assistance, including narrative change and media advocacy.
  • Triage and prioritize requests from partners and look for opportunities across projects to strengthen BMSG's work.
  • Conduct literature reviews on communication research related to health justice and equity.
  • Review drafts of communication and media advocacy plans and provide feedback.
  • Assess partners' needs and generate ideas for meeting these needs via developing new resources and conducting trainings.
  • Develop materials, including best practices for communicating about racial and health equity.
  • Coordinate logistics for virtual and in-person trainings, meetings, and consultations.
  • Support event delivery and post-event activities.
  • Track projects and partner requests, developing strategies for meeting requests.
  • Assist with project management using program management software to track activities and write grant reports.
  • Write proposals, case studies, and advocacy materials for publication.
  • Collaborate with BMSG's other teams on projects.

Requirements

  • 5 years of relevant experience in community organizing related to racial and health equity or governmental equity work.
  • A bachelor's degree in journalism, communication, public health, public policy, or related field, or substitute with two additional years of relevant experience.
  • Passion for public health, media, and communication with a commitment to racial and social justice.
  • Ability to build and maintain trusting relationships with diverse partners.
  • Comfortable with conflict and challenging situations.
  • Familiarity with core concepts and research related to racial and health equity.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the public policymaking process at local, state, and federal levels.
  • Experience with community organizing or working in a political office.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with media advocacy, such as writing and placing op-eds.
  • Experience with online meetings and social media management platforms.
  • Spanish-language ability.
  • Master's degree in public health, public policy, or related field.
