About the position

Showa Boston Health Services is seeking a dedicated Medical Assistant to join our team at our outpatient school health clinic located in Jamaica Plain, MA. This position is integral to our mission of providing culturally sensitive health services that promote health literacy and empower students to take responsibility for their wellness. As a Medical Assistant, you will play a vital role in delivering direct patient care and supporting our medical providers during campus visits and off-campus appointments. Your responsibilities will include managing patient check-ins and check-outs, answering phone calls with exceptional customer service, and providing administrative support to ensure the clinic operates smoothly and efficiently. In this role, you will verify student information by conducting interviews, recording medical histories, and confirming the purpose of visits. You will prepare students for examinations by performing preliminary physical tests such as taking blood pressure, weight, and temperature. Additionally, you will provide clinical support for walk-in students and assist with scheduling appointments for primary care and specialty services. Your ability to assist and chaperone students during off-campus appointments with a culturally appropriate and friendly demeanor will be essential in fostering a supportive environment. You will also be responsible for maintaining clinic supplies, ensuring equipment is operational, and assisting nurses with data input for health forms. Adhering to HIPAA guidelines to protect student privacy and confidentiality is paramount. The role requires you to demonstrate competency in various administrative tasks, including mail sorting, filing, and faxing, while maintaining standard precautions in all clinical activities. You will assist in emergencies as trained and ensure that exam rooms and equipment are disinfected daily. This position requires a commitment to professional standards and adherence to facility policies and procedures, as well as federal, state, and local regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Verifies student information by interviewing students, recording medical history, and confirming purpose of visit.
  • Prepares students for examination by performing preliminary physical tests; taking blood pressure, weight, and temperature.
  • Provides clinical support for walk-in students.
  • Assists with student care under the direction of the medical provider or RN.
  • Assists students with scheduling appointments for primary care and specialty services.
  • Chaperones students with off-campus appointments in a culturally appropriate manner.
  • Coordinates and provides reminders for visits, appointment referrals, and testing.
  • Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock, placing orders, and verifying receipt.
  • Maintains equipment by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, and performing preventive maintenance.
  • Assists nurses with data input for health forms and other administrative tasks.
  • Ensures privacy and confidentiality of students' health records and treatment, following HIPAA guidelines.
  • Demonstrates competency in mailings, sorting of mail, filing, faxing, and other administrative duties.
  • Understands and maintains standard precautions in all clinical activities, using PPE appropriately.
  • Assists in emergencies as trained, and calls for outside help or transport as directed.
  • Disinfects exam rooms and equipment daily and after contamination exposure with appropriate cleaning agents.
  • Adheres to professional standards, facility policies and procedures, and federal, state, and local requirements.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma/GED
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Successful completion of a Medical Assistant or EMT Program
  • Current CPR Certification, with AED
  • Valid Massachusetts driver's license
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Demonstrates a professional appearance, demeanor, and deportment as befitting a health care professional in an ambulatory care setting.
  • Understands and is familiar with basic medical terminology
  • Ability to work harmoniously and effectively with colleagues, students, clients, and vendors across the spectrum of diversity.

Nice-to-haves

  • CMA or RMA certification
