The Health Technician in Massage Therapy at the Department of Veterans Affairs provides clinical services to address a wide range of health issues affecting a diverse patient population. This role involves delivering advanced massage therapy services to specialty populations, including those in pain management, surgery, pulmonary care, rheumatology, palliative care, mental health, oncology, and other clinical settings. The massage therapist will work with limited supervision and coordinate follow-up care as needed. The massage therapist will utilize standard patient evaluation procedures to formulate treatment plans and incorporate various massage therapy techniques learned during their professional education. Responsibilities include providing advanced massage therapy services, such as reflexology, injury rehabilitation, lymphatic drainage, neuromuscular therapy, myofascial release, and craniosacral work. The therapist will also maintain a clean and calm environment by changing linens, refilling oils, and cleaning equipment. In addition to performing massage therapy, the therapist will educate patients and their families on healthy lifestyle choices, including hydration, stretching, exercise, and mind-body techniques. Documentation and coding of patient care information in the VA's electronic health care record is required, along with obtaining consent prior to treatment. The massage therapist will function as part of a healthcare team, communicating with other providers and participating in research and quality improvement activities related to massage therapy. The position requires ongoing professional development and attendance at required meetings.
