About the position

The Health Technician (Optometry) position at the Oklahoma City VA Healthcare System involves providing essential support in the optometry department. The role includes fitting eyeglasses, obtaining patient histories, performing visual acuity tests, and assisting with various ophthalmic procedures. The technician will also participate in quality assurance activities and ensure that exam rooms are properly stocked and maintained. This is a full-time, permanent position with opportunities for advancement within the GS-4 to GS-7 pay scale.

Responsibilities

  • Fit eyeglasses including single vision, bifocals, trifocals, and progressives.
  • Order frames and optical shop equipment.
  • Troubleshoot eyeglasses and perform minor repairs.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities and staff meetings.
  • Obtain accurate medical and ophthalmic histories from patients.
  • Measure and record visual acuity and spectacle prescriptions.
  • Triages patient phone calls and requests.
  • Ensure exam rooms are stocked with adequate supplies.
  • Instruct patients on the administration of eye drops and post-operative care.
  • Perform autorefractor tests to determine spectacle prescriptions.
  • Calibrate and maintain technical ophthalmology screening instruments.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • One year of experience as a health technician or assistant in the healthcare field, or two academic years above high school with relevant coursework, or a combination of experience and education.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory.
  • Ability to pass a drug test prior to appointment.

Nice-to-haves

  • One year of optical shop experience.
  • One year of eyeglass fitting experience.
