About the position

The Health Technician (Paramedic) position within the Department of Justice is responsible for providing emergency medical care and assessment to inmates in a correctional facility. This role requires quick decision-making in life-threatening situations and involves collaboration with medical providers to determine appropriate transport methods for patients. The technician must also maintain the security of the institution while performing medical duties, ensuring a balance between healthcare and correctional responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Provide emergency assessment and medical care to inmate patients.
• Act as the first responder to sudden illnesses or emergencies.
• Determine the appropriate method of transportation to local hospitals in consultation with medical providers.
• Prioritize treatments for patients with multiple medical issues.
• Employ established medical emergency procedures and techniques, including emergency triage.
• Maintain the security of the correctional institution while performing medical duties.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree related to the work of the position, or one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service.
• Current, active, and unrestricted certification as a National Registry Paramedic (NRP) or a state Paramedic license in the state of application.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in obtaining patient vital signs and performing venipuncture.
• Experience using medical emergency equipment such as EKGs and defibrillators.
• Knowledge of medication administration, doses, routes, and side effects.
