About the position

The position is located in the Health Services Department at a Federal Bureau of Prisons correctional facility, primarily responsible for providing emergency assessment and medical care to inmate patients. The role involves being the first responder in emergencies, determining appropriate transportation methods for patients, and maintaining the security of the institution while performing medical duties.

Responsibilities

  • Provide emergency assessment and medical care to inmate patients.
  • Act as the first responder at the scene of sudden illness or emergency situations.
  • Determine the most appropriate method of transportation to local hospitals in consultation with medical providers.
  • Prioritize treatments for patients with multiple medical issues.
  • Employ established medical emergency procedures, techniques, and equipment, including emergency triage.
  • Maintain the security of the correctional institution as a primary responsibility.

Requirements

  • Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree directly related to the work of the position.
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service, including obtaining patient vital signs and performing venipuncture.
  • Experience using medical emergency equipment such as EKGs and telemetry/defibrillators.
  • Experience stabilizing patients with closed and open soft tissue wounds.

Nice-to-haves

  • Current, active, and unrestricted certification as a National Registry Paramedic (NRP) or a state Paramedic license.
