About the position

The position is located in the Health Services Department at a Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) correctional facility, primarily responsible for providing emergency assessment and medical care to inmate patients. The role involves being the first responder at the scene of sudden illness or emergencies, determining appropriate transportation methods for patients, and prioritizing treatments while maintaining the security of the institution.

Responsibilities

  • Provide emergency assessment and medical care to inmate patients.
  • Act as the first responder in cases of sudden illness or emergencies.
  • Determine the most appropriate method of transportation to local hospitals in consultation with medical providers.
  • Prioritize treatments for patients with multiple medical issues.
  • Employ established medical emergency procedures, techniques, and equipment, including emergency triage.
  • Maintain the security of the correctional institution.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree directly related to the work of the position, or one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service.
  • Current, active, and unrestricted certification as a National Registry Paramedic (NRP) or a current, active state Paramedic license in the state of the position being applied for.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in obtaining patient vital signs and performing venipuncture.
  • Experience using various types of medical emergency equipment such as EKG and telemetry/defibrillator.
  • Knowledge of medication administration, doses, routes, and side effects.
