About the position

The Health Technician (Phlebotomist) position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves working primarily in the clinical laboratory as a phlebotomist. The incumbent will support laboratory operations through clerical tasks, accessioning, processing, and other testing duties. This role is essential for ensuring accurate specimen collection and processing, contributing to the overall patient care services provided by the laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Answer incoming calls for Laboratory Services and relay accurate information or refer callers to technical personnel.
  • Perform disposition of add-on orders and conduct observation-based screening.
  • Collect patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel, including health history and chief complaints.
  • Function as a resource for clerks and medical staff in executing Vista order entry and results options.
  • Reprint, mail, and fax laboratory reports to referring laboratories.
  • Maintain files of referral lab results, requisitions, and pending orders.
  • Ensure a clean, organized, and safe collection and processing workspace, managing supply levels for clinical specimen collection.
  • Perform inventory of the processing area and order supplies as necessary.
  • Assist with the collection and correlation of workload statistics, quality control, and monitor quality assurance data.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen to apply for this job.
  • Proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the federal service, including laboratory testing processes and phlebotomy techniques.
  • Four years of education above the high school level leading to a Bachelor's degree with major study related to the position, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with laboratory reference test catalogs and processing infrequently ordered send-out tests.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance and quality control procedures in a laboratory setting.
