About the position

The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) at Mayo Clinic plays a crucial role in providing organizational, receptionist, and clerical support to patient care units and the healthcare team. This position emphasizes effective communication, resourcefulness, and teamwork, ensuring that patient care is delivered efficiently and compassionately. The HUC is integral to the care delivery model, supporting both patients and healthcare professionals in a dynamic and respectful environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide organizational, receptionist, and clerical support to patient care units and the healthcare team.
  • Monitor and order supplies for the unit.
  • Assist the care team with managing orders in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and facility staff.
  • Function as a resource to members of the healthcare team and be familiar with multiple Mayo Clinic resources.
  • Anticipate and respond to team requests and patient needs.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities and self-development within the role.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age prior to start date.
  • Successful completion of a health unit coordinator program or comparable experience (preferred).
  • Current CHUC certification (preferred).
  • Certified Nursing Assistant on State of Wisconsin Nurse Aide Registry in 'non-expired' status (preferred).
  • Completion of 12 college credits or high school diploma/GED with successful completion of a Nursing Assistant training or equivalent (preferred).
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to multitask, work well under pressure, and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational, communication, writing, and listening skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team setting.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Flexibility to work flexible hours, including days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends.
  • Self-directed and able to adapt to unpredictable situations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross (if not currently held, will be included in orientation).
