About the position

The Health & Wellness Instructor at the YMCA of Greater Providence is responsible for providing quality instruction in aerobic and fitness classes, ensuring adherence to YMCA standards and guidelines. The role emphasizes creating a positive and engaging environment for participants while promoting health and wellness through various programs. The instructor will also be accountable for the safety of individuals in the fitness area and will serve as a member service ambassador, enhancing the overall experience for YMCA members.

Responsibilities

  • Provide enjoyable, high-quality class instruction.
  • Demonstrate and instruct proper exercise techniques in accordance with program standards.
  • Ensure the health and safety of all individuals in the fitness area, addressing unsafe practices and conditions.
  • Perform rescue and first aid when necessary.
  • Report accidents and injuries and complete incident reports.
  • Set up and break down equipment as necessary.
  • Find coverage for self in the event of an absence and notify the Program Director of the change.
  • Attend staff meetings and events.
  • Work harmoniously with staff, volunteers, and members of the YMCA.
  • Encourage participants during class instruction and represent the YMCA positively.
  • Stay informed about current programs and facility schedules to provide personalized direction to members.
  • Enhance professional development through additional certifications and training.
  • Communicate with members, making them feel welcome and addressing them by name.
  • Instruct group classes in accordance with national guidelines.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • 1-3 years of experience in a related field.
  • Valid Certified Group Exercise Instructor certification (to be obtained within 6 months of hire).
  • CPR/AED certification (to be obtained in-house).
  • First Aid certification (to be obtained through Outreach).
  • Principles of Health and Wellness certification (to be obtained within 3 months of hire).

Nice-to-haves

  • Foundations of YMCA Strength & Conditioning certification.
  • Foundations of YMCA Group Exercise certification.
  • YMCA Cardio and Step Aerobics Instructor certification.
