About the position

The Healthcare Eligibility Clerk/Financial Screening Clerk is responsible for managing patient eligibility reviews and processing new patient registrations at Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center. This role involves ensuring accurate application of eligibility criteria for various funding sources, maintaining payer source records, and providing excellent customer service to patients seeking medical services. The position requires a strong understanding of healthcare funding sources and the ability to work collaboratively with other staff members to support patient care and billing processes.

Responsibilities

  • Performs day-to-day administrative functions and general office duties including word processing, copying, filing, faxing, answering phones, and data entry.
  • Interviews new patients registering for medical services and determines eligibility for services and method of payment.
  • Adheres to all Clinic policies on safety and security; maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Provides excellent customer service and practices confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements.
  • Completes patient registration forms and creates patient registration and account files through data entry.
  • Starts new patient medical records and maintains a log of medical records numbers.
  • Creates and updates clinic cards for patients as required.
  • Explains available services, charging and billing policies, and patient rights and obligations.
  • Counsels patients about financial assistance options and makes referrals as appropriate.
  • Provides ongoing eligibility review for established patients as per health center policies.
  • Corresponds with patients to verify financial status or address information.
  • Ensures compliance with all funding sources and regulations.
  • Treats all patients with respect and courtesy, maintaining confidentiality.
  • Works with the Financial Eligibility Coordinator and Registration Services Coordinator for billing and management reports.
  • Handles patient complaints with problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Travels among sites and works flexible hours as required.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED required.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish required.
  • Minimum one-year experience in third-party billing, state-funded programs, and billing procedures required.
  • Minimum two years of clerical responsibility involving a broad range of duties.
