About the position

The Healthcare Engineer (GEMS Coordinator/Project Engineer) at the Western North Carolina VA Healthcare System is responsible for implementing and managing the Green Environment Management Systems (GEMS) to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and promote sustainable practices. This role involves coordinating with healthcare system staff, applying environmental science, and providing technical expertise for various projects related to environmental protection and healthcare facility management.

Responsibilities

  • Familiarize with the impact of activities on VA's environmental stewardship goals.
  • Coordinate efforts of healthcare system staff involved with GEMS.
  • Ensure GEMS is developed and implemented according to VHA and WNCHCS policies.
  • Apply environmental science and technology to demonstrate relationships between healthcare operations and environmental resources.
  • Provide leadership and direction regarding the development and implementation of GEMS.
  • Plan, organize, implement, and oversee projects to resolve environmental problems.
  • Manage healthcare system environmental programs and coordinate related efforts.
  • Perform project planning, design, and construction administration for various projects.
  • Serve on the Integrated Project Team (IPT) and oversee contracts for compliance with regulations and standards.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering or Architecture from an accredited institution.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles, theories, and practices relevant to healthcare environments.
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and guidelines for compliance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Engineering or Architecture.
  • Professional Engineer or Architect licensure.
  • Experience in project management within a healthcare setting.
