About the position

The Healthcare Engineer (Project Engineer) position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves overseeing and managing healthcare system projects at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center. The role includes project planning, design management, construction oversight, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and standards. The engineer will work on various projects, including minor construction, non-recurring maintenance, and station-level projects, while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of the healthcare system.

Responsibilities

  • Perform project planning and design management for healthcare system projects.
  • Oversee construction contracts to ensure compliance with contractual requirements and healthcare regulations.
  • Serve as the Integrated Project Team (IPT) Chairperson, leading a diverse team of professionals.
  • Conduct healthcare planning and design management, determining project requirements based on healthcare needs.
  • Review construction documents and provide recommendations for energy conservation and feasibility.
  • Manage construction administration, including contractor submittals and change order requests.
  • Train facility maintenance staff on new equipment and complex utility systems.
  • Provide project oversight for multi-million-dollar healthcare projects, ensuring compliance with project requirements.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering or Architecture from an accredited institution.
  • One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-11).
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, structural, civil, and other engineering principles as applied in healthcare environments.
  • Familiarity with healthcare industry standards and regulatory agencies such as The Joint Commission (TJC) and OSHA.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional registration or licensure as a Professional Engineer or Architect.
  • Experience in managing complex, multi-faceted projects in a healthcare setting.
  • Ability to organize and lead multi-disciplinary task forces.
