About the position

The Healthcare Interpreter at Cleveland Clinic plays a crucial role in facilitating communication between patients and caregivers who speak different languages. This position involves interpreting medical information in various modes, ensuring compliance with hospital policies, and supporting the operational needs of the department. The role is part-time and operates on a PRN basis, primarily during weekdays, with potential after-hours and weekend responsibilities based on patient needs.

Responsibilities

• Relay medical information between speakers of different languages in consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation modes.
• Explain hospital procedures and office protocols to clinicians and patients.
• Provide written transcriptions for forms, medication instructions, and patient materials.
• Support office operations by answering phones, scheduling appointments, and documenting encounters.
• Assist the department by participating in an on-call rotation.

Requirements

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
• One year of experience as an interpreter.
• Fluency in English and one or more foreign languages, both oral and written.
• Valid state driver's license and automobile insurance coverage.
• Ability to work in consecutive mode and sign translate into and from working languages.
• Strong medical vocabulary and knowledge of diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Familiarity with computer systems.

Nice-to-haves

• Bachelor's degree in a science or human services-related field.
• Certified Healthcare Interpreter (CHI) or Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI) certification.
• Professional and medical interpreting experience.
