About the position

The Hearings Officer II position within the Colorado Department of Revenue is responsible for conducting administrative hearings and issuing decisions regarding licenses issued or denied by the department. This role ensures that individuals and businesses receive due process in cases where their licenses may be denied, revoked, or suspended. The Hearings Division aims to provide fair and efficient hearings for various regulatory matters, including driving privileges and rulemaking hearings.

Responsibilities

• Conduct administrative hearings in accordance with statutory requirements and regulations.
• Issue written decisions in accordance with model decision standards.
• Rule on motions related to hearings.
• Perform administrative tasks as required.

Requirements

• Seven years of relevant experience in criminal or civil justice areas, administrative law, dispute resolution, or as an adjudicator or practicing attorney.
• A Juris Doctorate degree and an active law license are preferred.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to write legal documents clearly and succinctly.
• Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions in a high-volume setting.
• Strong understanding of Colorado laws related to the Department of Revenue and administrative law.
• Proficient computer skills, particularly in word processing and cloud-based software.

Nice-to-haves

• Additional years of adjudicative/litigation experience as a hearing officer, referee, judge, or practicing attorney.
• Experience in a quasi-adjudicative/litigation capacity in administrative law.
• Proven ability to work independently and manage a diverse caseload remotely.
• Familiarity with virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom or Google Meets.
