About the position

The HeartCorps Service Member position is a full-time service role with the American Heart Association aimed at promoting health equity in rural communities. This initiative, in collaboration with Public Health AmeriCorps, provides an opportunity for individuals to gain valuable public health experience while working towards improving health outcomes related to cardiovascular health and chronic diseases in the community.

Responsibilities

• Serve full-time Monday - Friday (41.25 hours per week) with occasional evening or weekend hours.
• Deliver health education and support to patients/community members on heart health topics including cardiovascular disease, smoking cessation, nutrition, and chronic diseases.
• Assist with public health surveys, including participant recruitment, administering surveys, tracking data, and running reports.
• Plan and conduct local health skill-building workshops, health fairs, town halls, or community conversations.
• Support patients and community members in Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring initiatives.
• Host Hands-Only CPR demonstrations for community members.
• Engage local organizations to develop resources for chronic disease interventions and overall health services.
• Participate in AmeriCorps pre-service orientation and member development meetings.

Requirements

• Must be a United States citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien, at least 18 years old, and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Reliable transportation to and from the host site and community activities, with a valid driver's license and minimum automobile liability insurance coverage.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Customer and solution-focused with good listening skills, non-judgmental, open-minded, and resourceful.
• Must satisfy National Service Criminal History Check eligibility criteria.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience as a health aide or coursework in public health, health communications, health promotion, or health sciences.
