About the position

HeartCorps is an initiative aimed at driving health equity in rural communities through public health service. This full-time service position at Oswego YMCA offers an opportunity to gain valuable experience while promoting equitable health outcomes, particularly in heart health and chronic disease management.

Responsibilities

  • Serve full-time Monday - Friday (41.25 hours per week) with occasional evening or weekend hours.
  • Deliver health education and support community members in navigating care and resources related to heart health topics.
  • Assist with public health surveys, including participant recruitment and data tracking.
  • Plan and conduct local health skill-building workshops and community events to raise health awareness.
  • Support community members in Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring initiatives.
  • Host Hands-Only CPR demonstrations for community members.
  • Engage local organizations to develop resources for chronic disease interventions and overall health services.
  • Participate in AmeriCorps pre-service orientation and member development meetings.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident, at least 18 years old, and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Reliable transportation to the host site and community activities, with a valid driver's license and minimum insurance coverage.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Customer-focused, good listener, non-judgmental, open-minded, and resourceful.
  • Must satisfy National Service Criminal History Check eligibility criteria.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience as a health aide or coursework in public health, health communications, health promotion, or health sciences.
