About the position

HeartCorps is an initiative by Public Health AmeriCorps and the American Heart Association aimed at promoting health equity in rural communities. This service position provides an opportunity for individuals to gain valuable public health experience while working towards equitable health outcomes in their communities. The role involves serving full-time or part-time, delivering health education, and supporting community members in navigating health resources related to cardiovascular health and chronic diseases.

Responsibilities

  • Serve full-time Monday - Friday (41.25 hours per week) with occasional evening or weekend hours for some placements.
  • Deliver health education and support patients/community members on heart health topics including cardiovascular disease, smoking cessation, nutrition, and chronic diseases.
  • Assist with public health surveys, including recruiting participants, administering surveys, tracking data, and running reports.
  • Plan and conduct local health skill-building workshops, health fairs, town halls, or community conversations to raise health awareness.
  • Support patients and community members in Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring initiatives.
  • Host Hands-Only CPR demonstrations for community members.
  • Engage local organizations to identify and develop resources for chronic disease interventions and overall health services.
  • Participate in AmeriCorps pre-service orientation, member development meetings, and assigned trainings.

Requirements

  • Must be a United States citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien, at least 18 years old, and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Reliable transportation to and from the host site and community activities is required, along with a valid driver's license and minimum automobile liability insurance.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Customer and solution-focused with good listening skills, non-judgmental, open-minded, and resourceful.
  • Must satisfy National Service Criminal History Check eligibility criteria.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience as a health aide or coursework in public health, health communications, health promotion, or health sciences.
