About the position
The Heavy Equipment/Auto Mechanic position at the Town of West Hartford involves performing skilled automotive and diesel mechanical work, including welding and fabrication, to repair, overhaul, and maintain various Town vehicles and equipment. The role requires working in challenging environments and handling heavy machinery, ensuring that all repairs and maintenance tasks are completed efficiently and safely.
Responsibilities
- Receive and interpret oral and written instructions and work orders from the Public Works Supervisor.
- Plan and organize work procedures using repair manuals and experience.
- Identify vehicle and equipment malfunctions and determine corrective actions through tests.
- Overhaul and repair engines, transmissions, brakes, chassis, and other mechanical parts.
- Use hand tools and power equipment, including acetylene welders, for repairs and replacements.
- Maintain shop equipment and tools, ensuring they are in good working condition.
- Keep accurate records of repairs and maintenance performed on vehicles and equipment.
- Schedule and execute preventative maintenance programs and safety inspections.
- Make road calls for emergency repairs on immobile vehicles and equipment.
- Assist in maintaining the parts room and inventory, ordering necessary mechanical parts.
- Follow safety procedures and regulations, using personal protective equipment as required.
- Install and remove snow and ice control equipment as needed.
Requirements
- Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent.
- Completion of a vocational or technical school program.
- Six years of experience in skilled automotive work, including heavy construction vehicles and welding.
- A.S.E. Automotive Certification preferred.
- Valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with air brake endorsement.
Nice-to-haves
- Modern diesel experience preferred.
