About the position

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely operating various types of heavy equipment, including excavators, front loaders, and bulldozers, to manage waste material. This role involves performing daily inspections and maintenance of the equipment, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and maintaining the cleanliness of the work area. The operator will also communicate effectively with team members and may substitute for absent colleagues as needed.

Responsibilities

• Safely operate heavy equipment including excavators, front loaders, and bulldozers.
• Perform daily inspections and maintenance checks of equipment.
• Grease and lubricate equipment, checking and adding fluids as necessary.
• Steer and guide equipment at assigned sites using various controls.
• Substitute for absent operators as needed.
• Clean trash from tracks of heavy equipment daily or as required.
• Use a two-way radio to communicate with co-workers regarding work activities.
• Conform to all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies.
• Maintain the appearance of the grounds and facility.
• Attend safety and branch meetings.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED desired, but not required.
• Completion of forklift certification.
• Ability to obtain Transfer Station/Landfill Operations Certification if needed.
• Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and work under little supervision.
• Ability to apply commonsense understanding to deal with problems in a standardized setting.
• Ability to perform basic math functions and read equipment gauges.
• Must be able to read, speak, understand, and write in English.
• Ability to frequently lift/push/pull up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
