About the position

The Heavy Equipment Operator position within the Department of Transportation is responsible for operating various types of heavy machinery and performing maintenance tasks related to highway construction and repair. This role involves working under close supervision to ensure the safe and efficient operation of equipment while contributing to the upkeep of roadways and related infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Operates heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, dozers, front-end loaders, cranes, backhoes, and snow removal equipment.
• Performs minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
• Repairs failures in roadway shoulders or bridge decks.
• Repairs and/or replaces signs, posts, guardrails, and fences.
• Provides traffic control assistance using a stop/slow sign or flag to direct highway traffic.
• Applies herbicide to highway right-of-ways to control weeds and unwanted vegetation.
• Removes debris including tires, animal carcasses, spilled items, and other obstacles.

Requirements

• Knowledge of the safe operation and maintenance of power equipment or heavy machinery.
• Ability to perform manual labor and maintain and operate power equipment.
• Ability to follow instructions.
