About the position

The Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic position at the Department of the Air Force is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, overhauling, repairing, and modifying a variety of heavy-duty vehicles and mobile equipment. This role involves working with utility systems or special hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, or electronic systems designed for construction, combat, earth moving, and firefighting purposes. The position is based at Luke AFB, AZ, and is a permanent, full-time role with a pay scale of WG 10.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot hard-to-locate problems and identify defects and causes of mechanical issues in firefighting vehicles and heavy mobile equipment.
• Repair, overhaul, and rebuild heavy mobile equipment/vehicles such as bulldozers, road graders, power shovels, mobile cranes, and missile transporters.
• Conduct functional and performance tests using various test procedures and equipment on completed work assignments.
• Utilize safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations, maintaining a safe and clean work environment.

Requirements

• Knowledge of heavy mobile equipment assembly, installation, and repair, including various types of vehicles and equipment.
• Knowledge of technical practices for repairing and overhauling major systems such as diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, and positioning systems.
• Skill in using measuring instruments and test equipment like engine analyzers and dynamometers.
• Ability to maintain, troubleshoot, overhaul, repair, and modify firefighting vehicles and heavy mobile equipment without more than normal supervision.
• Ability to interpret technical manuals, specifications, diagrams, and similar guides for repairs.

• Ability to use welding units is desirable.
